Bryophyte and Lichen of the Year 2022

Scientific advancement as a selection criterion: Enchylium tenax and Diobelonella palustris are bryophyte and lichen of the year 2022 (text in German).

Diobelonella palustris; Scotland/UK [M. Lüth]In previous years, we have always used ecological issues, such as global climate change or the impact of certain environmental pressures, as the basis for species selection. Of course, these issues are far from being overcome today, but especially against the background of the Covid-19 pandemic, a selection criterion should be used this time that does not contain an accusation, but rather points to the temporal development of scientific knowledge. That is why we chose taxonomy as the topical theme! And with Enchylium tenax and Diobelonella palustris, two species were chosen to illustrate the frequent taxonomic changes. Yes, in some genera scientifically founded and thus necessary name changes are more frequent than in others. And laymen may rub their eyes in the face of this because they assume that the scientific names are more constant over time. Admittedly, we biologists are also sometimes "annoyed" when we have to adapt our species lists "again" to current developments. But that is the way of the times and of scientific development.

Look here for recent species of the year:
